One team looking to regain their #1 status for the season, another looking to claim double gold. Monday's matchup in the MHSAA 4A Championship Final comes from the West Winnipeg Athletic Conference, as the season-long #1 Oak Park Raiders look to regain that status after falling in the conference semifinal, as they take on the now-#1 - and WWAC Champion - Vincent Massey Trojans. The two teams played three tight games this season, with the Raiders claiming wins in the Pembina Trails Classic Championship in December, the St. Vital Invitational Championship in January, as well as their league matchup in January. The Trojans claimed a large victory a day after the final rankings of the season came out in February, knocking Oak Park's perfect conference record into the dust.
Returning to the Championship game for the third time in the past four years, the Vincent Massey Trojans look to win their second championship in that span and their 11th overall. Averaging the second-most points per game by a Winnipeg-based team this season (70.0 - 2100 in 30 games) and the stingiest defense (41.7 points against per game), the Trojans average +28.3 points per game against all opponents. Their most recent loss on the season came at the hands of the Westwood Warriors, a 72-68 loss on Feb. 8, that they avenged in the semifinal matchup. Three of the other four came at the hands of their opponents in the Raiders - a problem they look to solve on Monday. Against teams in the Provincial tournament, the five losses were by seven points or less, while 21 of their 22 wins were double-digit spreads. They eclipsed the 70-point mark 14 times and the 80-point mark six times, while held opponents to 50 or less 22 times, and 40 or less 14 times, allowing them to claim the tournament's #1 seed after winning their conference championship. With a balanced game played in the semifinal - no player played 20 minutes for Vincent Massey - the Trojans look to be rested and ready for one final game on Monday night.
The Oak Park Raiders return to the Championship game after a one-year absence - avenging their semifinal loss last season, and Championship loss two seasons ago, to the Sisler Spartans - for their fifth Championship appearance in the past seven years (1-3), looking for their first title since 2013 and fifth overall. After a first half scare for the highest-scoring-per-game Winnipeg-based team (71.7 - 2152 in 30 games) against the Spartans, a lockdown second half where they held Sisler to quarters of 9 and 5, led to the Raiders punching their ticket to the final. Only three losses for Oak Park - one avenged in the semifinal, one to an Alberta team, and the third in the last meeting with the Trojans - led them to be the #1 seed for the entire season, until the loss to Sisler in the conference semifinal. Outscoring their opponents by +24.5 points per game, they also eclipsed the 70 and 80-point marks often (15 and eight, respectively), while holding their opponents under 50 points 19 times, and under 40 points in eight contests. All five of Oak Park's starters played 34+ minutes in the semifinal against Sisler, allowing them to reach double-digits in at least one stat each.
The conference rivals have had two back-and-forth years, with Vincent Massey taking a 4-0 series win in 2015-16, before Oak Park bounced back with a 3-1 run this season. Another matchup on Monday should prove to be another Provincial classic between the two offensively and defensively-gifted teams.
