One team looking to make history, another looking to knock off the machine. Monday's MHSAA 4A Championship Final features two teams from the Winnipeg Tier One conference for the sixth-straight year. The number-one ranked Oak Park Raiders are looking to become only the second team in MHSAA 4A history to win back-to-back-to-back titles, while the Sturgeon Heights Huskies look to play spoiler while winning their first ever title. The battle looks to be uphill for the Huskies, however, as Oak Park swept the four meetings this season.
Oak Park's road to three-straight titles last went through the only other team to do so in the Glenlawn Lions (2000-02), winning the semifinal matchup X-Y. Looking to bring home their seventh banner overall, the Raiders have duplicated a number of feats from last season, including 30+ wins, one loss to an out-of-town team in an away tournament, and off-the-chart scoring all season long. They average a staggering 4A-high 88.0 points per game, with 17 90-point games, and scoring at least 70 points in every game this season, while only allowing an average of 43.9 points per game, holding opponents to 50 or less in 27 of 32 games on the year. Oak Park boasts four of the top 10 players in the province in Lauren Bartlett (2, committed to Manitoba), Claire Signatovich (3, Alberta), Emily Johnson (4, Alberta) and Holly Klassen (8), the most since the 2009 class (Vincent Massey).
The literal 'dogs in the fight, the Sturgeon Heights Huskies look to shed the label after ending the River East Kodiaks' Cinderella story in dominating fashion on Thursday night. Their 27 wins overall this season are the most by a non-number one seed in the past five seasons, and were it not for a surprise upset in the conference semifinal by the Sisler Spartans, they would likely have ended up in the number two spot as they were all season long. The Huskies are one of only three teams to break the 2000 point barrier on the season, averaging 65.8 points per game, breaking the 60-point mark in all but two games played against Manitoban opposition not named Oak Park. The Huskies also lay claim to this year's top player in the province, in University of Winnipeg commit Anna Kernaghan.
Will the Raiders be able to finish off a historic run? Or will the Huskies, 10-20 just two seasons ago, be able to pull off the major upset and claim their first Provincial title? Monday night's final chapter will surely be historic.
